You do not need a smart TV for IPTV. The TV is only a screen; a small device does the work. If your TV has an HDMI port, you are a few minutes away from live channels.
Three options
| Device | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick or Google TV stick | Low | Most people |
| Android TV box with Ethernet | Medium | Stable evening streams |
| MAG box | Medium | A simple remote, no apps |
Plug the device into HDMI and power (use the supplied adapter, not the TV's USB port, which often lacks power), select that HDMI input, and follow the setup guide for that device: Firestick, Android box, MAG box.
TVs without HDMI
Very old TVs with only SCART or composite (red, white, yellow) need an HDMI to AV converter. Picture quality is limited to standard definition, but it works for news and radio-style viewing.
HD-ready TVs
An "HD ready" 720p TV shows Full HD channels scaled down, which looks fine. 4K channels are wasted on it; choose the HD version to save bandwidth.
Control with one remote
Turn on HDMI-CEC in the TV menu (Anynet+, SimpLink, Bravia Sync, depending on brand). Then the stick's remote can switch the TV on and control volume.
Questions and answers
Can I watch IPTV on a TV that is not smart?
Yes. Plug a streaming stick or IPTV box into its HDMI port.
What if my TV has no HDMI port?
Use an HDMI to AV converter; picture quality will be standard definition.
Why does my stick restart when plugged into the TV USB?
TV USB ports often give too little power. Use the wall adapter.
