IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV

A small device with full Google Play: here is how to get the best from it.

The Chromecast with Google TV (and its successor, the Google TV Streamer) is not a cast-only dongle: it runs full Google TV with Google Play, so you install IPTV players on it like on any Android TV.

Setup

  1. Finish the Google TV setup and install updates.
  2. Search for TiviMate or IPTV Smarters in the Apps tab and install.
  3. Log in with your Viking IPTV Xtream details.
  4. Pin the app to your favourites row.

The storage problem

The Chromecast HD and 4K models have about 8 GB of storage, and much of it is used by the system. Keep only one or two players installed, clear the cache from Settings, Apps when it fills, and keep the guide to a few days.

Ethernet

There is no Ethernet port, but a USB-C hub with Ethernet and power pass-through works. For evening football it is worth it.

Old cast-only Chromecasts

Older Chromecasts without a remote can only receive a cast from a phone app. Several iPhone and Android players can cast; quality depends on the phone and Wi-Fi. For daily use, a Google TV model is far better.

Questions and answers

Can Chromecast with Google TV run TiviMate?

Yes, from Google Play.

Why does my Chromecast say storage full?

It has little storage. Remove unused apps and clear the IPTV player's cache.

Can I cast IPTV from my phone to an old Chromecast?

Yes, from players that support casting, though a Google TV model is smoother.
