IPTV buffering: 12 fixes in the right order

Start at the top; most people are fixed by step five.

Buffering means the player is receiving video more slowly than it plays it. The cause is almost always somewhere between your router and your screen, especially if it happens mainly in the evening. Work through these fixes in order; they are sorted from quickest to most involved.

Quick fixes (2 minutes)

  1. Restart the streaming device completely: unplug it for 30 seconds, not just standby.
  2. Restart the router the same way.
  3. Try another channel. If only one channel buffers, the problem is that channel's source; try its backup version or report it to support.
  4. Close other streams and downloads on the network: game updates, cloud backups, other TVs.

Network fixes (10 minutes)

  1. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz; it is much faster at short range.
  2. Use Ethernet. The single most effective fix for TVs and boxes. Powerline adapters are a good middle ground.
  3. Move the router out of cupboards and away from the TV's metal back.
  4. Change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 on the device or router; see DNS for IPTV.

Player fixes

  1. Switch the player engine or decoder (hardware/software) in the app's settings.
  2. Increase the buffer size if your player offers it.
  3. Clear the app cache on Fire TV and Android: Settings, Applications, the player, Clear cache.

If it only happens in the evening

  1. Test with a VPN. If buffering disappears with a VPN, your internet provider is slowing streaming traffic at peak times. See ISP throttling.

Questions and answers

Why does IPTV buffer at night?

Evening congestion on Wi-Fi or at your internet provider. Ethernet and, if your ISP throttles, a VPN usually fix it.

Does a faster internet plan stop buffering?

Only if your speed is genuinely too low. Most buffering is Wi-Fi or congestion, not plan speed.

Will clearing the cache help?

On Firestick and Android, yes, especially when storage is nearly full.
