DNS turns names like server.example into the numeric address your device connects to. Your ISP's DNS may be slow, or may block some streaming domains. Switching to a public DNS can help.
Public DNS servers
| Provider | Primary | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | 1.1.1.1 | 1.0.0.1 |
| 8.8.8.8 | 8.8.4.4 | |
| Quad9 | 9.9.9.9 | 149.112.112.112 |
Where to change it
- Router: changes DNS for every device. Look for DNS under WAN or Internet settings.
- Android TV / Google TV: Network, your Wi-Fi, IP settings Static, set DNS 1 and DNS 2 (or Private DNS: one.one.one.one).
- Fire TV: Network, forget the network, reconnect with Advanced settings and enter DNS.
- Windows: Network settings, edit DNS server assignment.
What it can and cannot fix
DNS fixes "server not found" errors and DNS-based blocking. It does not fix Wi-Fi weakness or throttling of the stream itself.
