In larger or multi-floor homes, a single router may not deliver a steady signal to every TV. Mesh systems use several units working as one network.
When mesh helps
- The TV is two or more walls or a floor away from the router.
- Speed tests on the TV are much lower than near the router.
- Several TVs and many devices share the network.
Placement
- Main unit connected to the modem.
- Second unit halfway to the TV room, not inside it.
- If possible, connect the TV to the nearest unit with a short Ethernet cable.
Wired backhaul
If you can run cable between mesh units, do it: the units then talk over the cable and Wi-Fi is left for devices.
Mesh vs extender
Extenders repeat the signal and halve throughput. Mesh units coordinate and usually use a dedicated band between them. For IPTV, mesh is the better choice.
