An M3U playlist is a text file listing channels and the address of each stream. Your provider gives you a link to it; your player downloads the file and shows the channels.
What is inside
Each channel has two lines: an information line (name, logo, group, guide ID) and the stream address. A playlist can contain thousands of entries.
M3U vs M3U8
M3U8 is the same format saved in UTF-8 text, which supports accents and non-Latin names. In IPTV the two names are used almost interchangeably.
Where to use it
- VLC (open network stream).
- Smart TV apps that load playlists via a website (Smart IPTV, SS IPTV).
- Kodi's PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- Any player that offers "M3U URL".
M3U or Xtream?
| Setup | Paste one long link | Server, username, password |
|---|---|---|
| TV guide | Needs a separate EPG link | Included |
| Large lists | Can be slow to load | Loads in parts |
| Updates | Re-download whole file | Automatic |
Use Xtream Codes when your app supports it, and keep the M3U link for apps that do not. Both come with your Viking IPTV account.
Your M3U link contains your username and password. Treat it like a password and never post it online.
