IPTV on Roku: what actually works

An honest look at Roku and the realistic options.

Viking IPTV Editorial Team · 3 min read

Roku is a great streaming platform for the big apps, but it is the hardest for IPTV. Roku's Channel Store does not carry the mainstream IPTV players (TiviMate, Smarters, IBO Player), and Roku does not allow sideloading in the way Android does.

The options

What we recommend

If you want IPTV to be part of daily viewing, add a streaming stick to a free HDMI port and keep the Roku for everything else. A Fire TV Stick costs little and gets you the full player choice; see the Firestick walkthrough.

Roku TVs

Roku-branded televisions (TCL, Hisense and others) have the same limitation. Your Roku TV still has HDMI ports, though, and a stick plugged into one gives you IPTV with the TV's own remote controlling volume.

Mirroring as a stopgap

On Android, open Quick Settings, choose Screen Cast or Smart View, pick the Roku. Then play the channel in your IPTV app. Expect slightly softer pictures and occasional drops.
