IPTV does not need a huge connection, but it needs a steady one. A line that tests at 100 Mbps in the morning and dips to 10 Mbps on Wi-Fi in the evening will buffer more than a stable 30 Mbps line.
Speed per stream
| Quality | Recommended per stream |
|---|---|
| SD | 5 Mbps |
| HD (720p) | 10 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | 15 to 20 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD | 25 Mbps or more |
Viking IPTV recommends at least 30 Mbps for comfortable HD and Full HD viewing and 50 Mbps for 4K, leaving room for the rest of the household.
Adding up a household
Add each screen watching at once, then add about a third for phones, laptops and updates. Two Full HD TVs plus everyday use: around 50 Mbps.
Test the right way
- Test on the TV or stick itself, not your phone next to the router. Fire TV and Android TV have speed test apps.
- Test in the evening, when buffering usually happens.
- Test on Wi-Fi and, if possible, on Ethernet to see the difference.
Faster plan or better Wi-Fi?
If the test on Ethernet is good and on Wi-Fi poor, a faster plan will not help: fix Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi tips). If both are poor in the evening, talk to your ISP or read about throttling.
