# How IPTV works, from studio to screen

> How IPTV works step by step: channel capture, encoding, servers, CDNs, your internet connection and the player app, with what affects quality.

Every IPTV channel goes through the same chain. Understanding it helps you tell where a problem comes from.

## The chain

- **Source**: the channel's broadcast feed is received.
- **Encoding**: the video is compressed (H.264 or HEVC) into a stream at one or more qualities.
- **Servers**: the streams are hosted on servers, often spread across several locations with load balancing so viewers connect to a nearby, less busy one.
- **Delivery**: the stream travels over the internet to your router, usually in short segments (HLS) or a continuous transport stream (TS).
- **Your network**: router, [Wi-Fi](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-wifi-tips/) or cable, to your device.
- **Player**: the app decodes the video, shows the guide, and handles channel switching.

## What affects quality at each step

Step | Affects | You control it? |
Encoding | Sharpness, bitrate | No |
Servers | Stability at peak times | Choose a good provider |
Your ISP | Speed, throttling | Partly ([VPN](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-vpn-guide/), DNS) |
Home network | [Buffering](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-buffering-fixes/) | Yes (Ethernet, 5 GHz) |
Device and player | Smoothness, decoding | Yes |

## Why there is a delay

Encoding, segmenting and buffering add a few seconds to tens of seconds compared with broadcast. That is why a neighbour with satellite may cheer a goal before you see it. A delay of 5 to 30 seconds is normal.

## Logins

Your player connects to the server with credentials, either an [Xtream Codes login](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/xtream-codes-login-explained/), an [M3U link](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/m3u-playlist-explained/), or a portal for [MAG boxes](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-on-mag-box/).
