# EPG: the IPTV TV guide explained

> What EPG means in IPTV, where guide data comes from, how players match it to channels, and how to fix gaps and wrong times.

**EPG** means Electronic Programme Guide: the grid showing what is on now and later. In IPTV it is delivered separately from the channels, usually in a format called XMLTV.

## How it gets to your screen

- Guide data is collected per channel.
- Your provider publishes it as an EPG link (or includes it with your Xtream login).
- Your player downloads it and matches each entry to a channel using an ID.

## Why some channels have no guide

- The channel has no published schedule.
- The channel's ID in the playlist does not match the guide's ID.
- The guide download failed or was cut short (storage, network).

## Getting the best guide

- Prefer [Xtream Codes](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/xtream-codes-login-explained/) logins, which include the guide.
- Update once a day.
- Keep 3 to 7 days depending on the device.
- Set your time zone correctly ([wrong time fix](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-wrong-time-guide/)).

Viking IPTV plans include an updated EPG; if a guide looks empty, see [EPG not loading](https://blog.vikingiptvofficial.com/iptv-epg-not-loading/).
